Discover a Smarter Way to Get Around—
On Your Terms

What if getting around could cost less, impact the planet less and give you more freedom—not less? SmartGO is building a future where personal mobility doesn’t require car ownership, where driving less leads to real savings and where every trip—regardless of how it’s made—supports a healthier planet and a smarter, more equitable transportation system.

We call it the SmartGO Mobility Ecosystem—an integrated approach to getting around in ways that are less polluting and less likely to congest our roads. While the full ecosystem is still in development, significant parts of this framework are already taking shape through real-world collaboration with some of the largest and most forward-looking U.S. states.

Tackling the Toughest Challenge

SmartGO’s approach goes beyond traditional transportation demand management (TDM) strategies, which often focus only on commute trips or people who already use sustainable modes. Instead, we engage directly with the most challenging group: solo drivers who may want to reduce car use but don’t know where to start. Consistent with established behavior-change theory, we meet people where they are—behind the wheel—and provide a path forward using real incentives and practical tools.

Our initial focus is pay-per-mile (PPM) auto insurance, which is already operational through partner insurers. It’s the backbone of our system, creating verified mileage data that qualifies users for rewards and other benefits, while offering a clear billing channel to apply mobility-related charges and credits. This transparency helps users better understand—and manage—their true cost of mobility.

We know that car travel remains essential in most U.S regions. That’s why SmartGO is designed to work everywhere—from walkable city centers to car-dependent suburbs—supporting people however and wherever they move.

Why SmartGO?

Today, transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. Cars and light trucks account for over half of that problem. Yet millions of Americans lack affordable, sustainable alternatives—and remain dependent on privately owned vehicles as their only mobility option.

SmartGO offers a better way forward. Just as AAA helped shape the car culture of the 20th century, SmartGO is helping to build the digital and policy infrastructure for a car-optional 21st century. Through participation in our growing network, users help shape that future—while receiving immediate personal benefits.

What We Do

SmartGO is a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) working to enable car-optional lifestyles and promote healthier, lower-impact transportation choices. We collaborate with insurers, governments, nonprofit organizations, public agencies and individuals to support cleaner, more flexible travel—whether that means walking, biking, using transit, sharing vehicles or simply driving less.

The foundation of our ecosystem is simple: Governments and others in many regions are now willing to pay for reduced auto use; as a result, your mobility data has value. By securely collecting information about your travel—miles driven, avoided, or shifted to low-impact modes—we can reward SmartGO network members. At the same time, anonymized data from across our network can unlock broader insights that support smarter policy, pricing and planning.

Elements of the SmartGO Mobility Ecosystem

SmartGO is aligning the interests of government, business and everyday travelers to create a more efficient, affordable and transparent mobility system. Here are current and proposed elements of the ecosystem:

  • Pay-Per-Mile (PPM) Auto Insurance
Already operational through SmartGO partners, this form of coverage ties insurance costs to actual mileage. It’s fairer for low-mileage drivers and encourages reduced driving—cutting emissions and crash risk.

  • Non-Owner Auto Insurance
A flexible option for people who don’t own a car but occasionally rent or borrow one. Some plans extend protections to walking, biking, and transit use—ideal for people who mix modes.

  • SmartGO Mobility Credits (in development)
Members earn credits when they travel via sustainable modes—walking, biking, transit or carpooling. These credits can be redeemed for transit passes, bikeshare or to offset other travel costs.

  • Mobility Wallets (in development)
A forthcoming feature aimed at helping economically disadvantaged users pay for low-impact transportation, reducing barriers to access.

  • Road Use Charging (future integration)
As gas tax revenues decline, and more states move to mileage-based approaches to paying for roads, SmartGO’s ecosystem can easily extend to data collection and/or billing of road use charges.

  • Congestion Pricing and Tolling (future integration)
SmartGO is exploring partnerships to help support equitable tolling models that manage congestion while funding multimodal investments.

Together, these components form a flexible, scalable, and data-driven framework to support reduced VMT and more balanced mobility choices.

Education, Empowerment and Impact

SmartGO is more than a platform—it’s a public-benefit movement that brings together individuals, communities, and institutions. We work with government agencies, employers and advocacy groups to educate travelers, reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and increase access to more sustainable options—without sacrificing convenience.

Together, we’re creating a future where you control your mobility, your data powers better systems and your everyday choices help protect the planet.

That’s the SmartGO Mobility Ecosystem.
